Those teenage dreams, You’re standing on the stage, Guitar on your neck. Out on the road now For a hundred days, You ain’t coming back. Tour bus, a cheap squeeze And some free booze, What more can you ask? But when the truth kicks in, It knocks you on your ass. Everybody’s stealing everything you do. Blatant, daylight thieving your livelihood from you. Every two-bit chancer undeserving of Your dreams and fears. It’s a life that’s tough to love. ‘Course, you still do it, You know it’s what you do, The future be damned. No family back home That depends on you, You just play your hand. You might sell some t-shirts, Enough to buy some gas To stay on the road. You give your heart and soul, ‘Cos this is rock n’ roll. But all the sharks want feeding, they’re closing in. Long as you’re still breathing, they want in. Every thieving bastard, is gorging at your trough. Left in arrears It’s a life that’s tough to love. Everybody’s stealing everything you do. Blatant, daylight thieving your livelihood from you. Every faux promoter, wants all of the above. Your sweat your tears. It’s a life that’s tough to love. You can try for years but this life is tough to love.

I reckon life’s a bitch, we struggle then we die. So, hold on tight to bits of joy that fill your life. When old man Blues creeps up and looks to grip my soul. I shake the bastard with some heavy rock n’ roll. May sound familiar but all the same, It calls to the marrow and it takes away the pain. Lodged in my cortex, deep in my spine, It’s the most vital of all my vital signs. I’ll stand tall, I’ve Got my Rock n’ Roll Will not fall, I’ve Got my Rock n’ Roll Won’t bring me low, I’ve Got my Rock n’ Roll Ah fuck it all, I’ve Got my Rock n’ Roll Work hard for fifty years to keep myself afloat. A cog within the gears that drive the status quo. But that can’t quench the fire that smoulders in my bones. That’s me, that’s mine, that’s who I am, I’ve got my rock n’ roll. The four-four thunder, quickens the pulse, Pushes the heart rate up, it gets the right results. Three chord lightning, jagged and unhinged. Random, casual danger, like a flamethrower in the wind. It’s not incidental but when I’m going mental, It keeps me anchored, keeps me sane. A sure and trusted defense from tumbling off the deep end, It’s saved me over and again.

See the king, full of anger and suspicion, Seated fearful on his gilded throne. Hallucinating in his personal perdition, Trusting no-one, fearing overthrow. There’s traitors within and enemies without, The faceless numberless, they seek him out. Live by deception and die self-deceived. The shit you sow is hate you reap. Heavy weighs the crown. Heavy. He built his path on dirt, on lies and on betrayal And it took him to the highest place. Removing barriers, through threats or through defrayal. Selling hatred and disgrace. And all the buyers, are there to be used As willing parties to their own abuse. So throw him garlands, and chant his name, This motherfucker wins again. It’s not like we don’t know. We’ve seen this play a thousand times before. We know how this one goes, So kiss your loved ones and prepare for war. It’s at your door. See the king, in his painted sandstone palace, Seated guilty on his gilded throne. Fantasizing, frotting, poisonous with malice, Power corrupting to the bone. No love within, no empathy without, Unless you’re useful you don’t count. So throw your garlands and chant his name But don’t forget to take the blame.

Sat here with nighthawks again Riding south through the blackening Sheltered from the early morning rain En route to a welcome bed Smell of whiskey and cigarettes My thoughts my retinue, my train Supped full of laughter and drunk again Putting the world to rights yeah, out with my friends I’m heading home on the Southbound Bus again I’ve had my full of having fun again I’m heading home on the Southbound Bus again I’ve had it all and the night is done again The route is familiar Seen a thousand times or more The buildings rolling through my view The silent streets pass by Snaking under a starless sky I’m on my wheels and I am coming through Supped full of laughter and drunk again Out and carousing with the boys in the band I’m heading home on the Southbound Bus again I’ve had my full of having fun again I’m heading home on the Southbound Bus again I’ve had it all and the night is done again Now two weeks after, trapped in my pen I need to get out, on the road again. No sounds of laughter and bored again Home and I’m battling with the thoughts in my head I’m leaving home on the Southbound Bus again I need my full of having fun again I’m heading home on the Southbound Bus again I want it all and the night is young again

The Ditch 03:30
Cognac and cheap cigars, Keep ‘em coming, pour ‘em tall and slow. No stopping, it’s still dark, You're with me, we’ve no place else to go. Sounds good to me, I’m gonna scratch that itch. We'll take two for the road, Two more for the ditch. Punch drunk and drunk again, Rack ‘em up man, now don't you be shy. Tomorrow's loss is tonight's gain, I got a when and a where, don’t need a why. I’m right where you want, I’m gonna get my fix. Let’s get two for the road, Two more for the ditch. Tight in Jean and loose of shame, You’re my tonic, oh my sweet relief. Look at us, we're moth and flame, I'm your convert, blind in my belief. Spirits in my mind, Grant me that wish. And it’s two for the road, Two more for the ditch.

Here you come now, my day is ruined for sure. Everyone legs it cos they've heard it all before. Why's it always me you ask but I ask the same. The broken record of your woes is keeping them away Gimme a minute while I fix your drink. Any respite will do, need a second to think. Take a look around, no-one left to save me. Only me here to hear it, no-one else can take it. Worse things have happened to much better people. Worse things have happened to much better people. And I ain't no priest and that ain't no steeple. Worse things have happened to much better people. Stab you in the face, or stab myself instead. Never this close to death, never wished someone dead. And I got nothing for you, no I'm not your guy. Sympathy-town is empty and its river's running dry. You don't want no help, just to bitch and fucking moan. There's a reason she left, its cos of you that you're alone. It’s the same old trope, you’re down, out, broke and feeble. But buddy worse things have happened, to much better people. Worse things have happened to much better people. Worse things have happened to much better people, But I ain't no priest and that ain't no fucking steeple. Worse things have happened to much better people.

Anger to the left of me and fury to the right. Devil on my shoulder as I walk into the night. Boiling with frustration and my lot in this sad life. Hands are in my pockets with my fist around my knife. Hoping some poor sucker’s gonna stare me in the eye. Gonna kick it off before I get back home tonight. Hot anticipation, wanna get into a fight. Satisfy that burning rage and feel that dizzy high. I don’t need a reason to justify my life. I just have my needs and your ass is mine tonight. Staring down the barrel of a five-year stretch. Staring down the barrel. Bailiff to the left of me and Jury on the right. Judge is on my shoulder, gonna do me outta spite. Not much chance of bail he says, you used a goddamn knife. I know what I did and I don't give a fucking shite. Itching on the inside, I can feel what's coming next. Judge is getting angry, says my life's a total wreck. Please don't keep me waiting boss, I'm sitting on the edge. Dying to get started on this five-year stretch.

Drift Away 03:19
It’s hard to give a flying damn some days. This world can beat you in a thousand ways. No cure for stupid, no cure in sight for greed or hate. Polarization, you going my way? Divided, conquered, I remain in chains. I drift away. Try your best to ignore what I have to say. You just wait your turn to talk, no attention paid. No time to listen, enlightenment has been betrayed. Ignorance is bliss, everything’s OK. You blindly stumble through your darkened days. You drift away. It’s hard to give a flying damn, some days. This world will beat you in a thousand ways. No space for nuance, no room for doubt in any way. Get with the program or go away. We do not want to hear what you have to say. We drift away.

It’s like an earthquake when it’s shaking the ground, Hits like a hammer with a great wall of sound. Crackling electricity, White-hot spark of energy. Gets your head a noddin', it’ll rattle your bones. Rush of adrenaline right down to your toes. You’re a slave to the thumping beat. Gas to burn, turn up the heat. It’s hard to explain when after all, It’s only rock n’ roll (but I like it). Hits home, again and again, Deep within my soul (and I like it). We got our groove on And this is how we roll. Here it comes, it’s got you jumping around. It’s irresistible, it never backs down. Something extrasensory, From the lizard memory. It’s like an earthquake when it’s shaking the ground, Hits like a hammer with a great wall of sound. Crackling electricity, Living ball of energy.

Well, there’s this woman, she plays bass guitar. A psychodrama, I still wear the battle-scars. We had great moments, But goddamned awful hours in between. We went travelling on a racing bike. All over Europe so, well, what’s not to like? Those days were special. We hoped the summer wasn’t going to end. But nothing lasts forever, We end up back in the same place again. I go out drinking and lose my mind. Keeps me from thinking, lets me unwind. But the next day finds me, Blinking hard into the midday sun. The last laugh’s on the world And I’m back to where the last day had begun. And here you’ll find me, sat with my guitar. Putting my life on tape, the booze the battle scars. I’ve had my moments, I try not to give a damn about it all. 'Cos nothing lasts forever, And now I’m back in the same place again.

Head To Toe 03:34
Head to Toe, dripping wet from you. Crazy eyes look up, you're crawling in to view. Why you stopping, is it part of the show? Turn you around, you're perfect head to toe. Silky smooth, just like before. Never again, (you're) evil to the core. Head to toe, I can never say no. Head to toe, I can't do this no more. Hide the knives, who knows what you'll do. Want to be inside you, only this is true. I am weak when you're on my brain. Should know better by now because you're fucking insane. A long way from home, what can I do? To get away, get away, to get away from you? A long way to go, what can I do? To find my way back baby, back to you? Loads are blown and baby sins are sold, My nose to the floor, will this shit ever get old? Got to escape, but I'll be back, for sure. You got me looking for mo’, you’re perfect head to toe.

Call the Boatman. Put the pennies on my eyes. Call the Boatman. Put those pennies on my eyes. He’ll come to meet me, As I lay me down to die. Call the Boatman to come and take these weary bones. Call the Boatman to come and take this weary soul. Across the river, he will come to take me home I lived my life as I wanted it lived But now it’s time to cash in my chips. So, call the Boatman To come and tally up my score. He’ll come to take me, Take me to the darker shore. So, call the Boatman. Put the pennies on my eyes. Call the Boatman. Put those pennies on my eyes. He’ll come to meet me, As I lay me down to die.
